Their are many traditional tools that are being used in music classes around the world. Charts, posters, white boards, and many more. On the other hand there’s a pretty handy tool that isn’t traditionally used. That would the iPad or tablet. These are great tools and can be used in many ways to enhance your classroom and lesson plans. First off I would like to point out a form of assessment that Jim Phillips an instrumental teacher at Coeur d’Alene High School has been doing. One way that Phillips uses “the video camera for is immediate feedback”. (nafme.org) Phillips will record his class and play the videos back to them. This is a great way for not only the teacher to assess, but also an opportunity for the students to self assess their own performances. To take the idea of recording your class another step forward, Phillips will use the recordings to diagnose and create lessons plans. This is a great way to use this technology. By watching over these videos it becomes clear what the teacher needs to work on with their ensemble/class. Afterwards we can take this new found knowledge and put it into a weeks worth of lesson plans. Another way that Tablets or iPads can be used in a music classroom is by using apps. All kinds of apps! Here’s a big one, a metronome app. We as music teachers are always having to slow passages down, speed them up, or even just pound out the correct tempo when performing rhythmically challenging pieces. That being said Tablets and iPads are a must have in today’s music classrooms.
