Music Education and Technology

Music teaching and technology belong together. Technology is a great tool to use in music classrooms because it really can help keep young students focused and engaged. “Christopher Russell, a choir director from Minnesota, is a big proponent of finding meaningful ways to incorporate technology into classes.”(edtechmagazine.com) I believe that that is the most important part about using technology in your classroom. Finding the right stuff to that will be most effective in your class room. For example, last semester I was working on rhythm and pitch with boomwhackers in my 3rd grade music class. First we were just looking at pitch and rhythm on some sheet music that was on the board and we had them play through the couple bars. The results were fine but the students weren’t very engaged. The next time we came back to the boomwhackers we changed the activity a little bit by using a Halloween themed YouTube video for very basic boomwhacker playing. The video had different sized pumpkins to indicate whether the rhythm would be a quarter note or an eighth note. Also both the pumpkins and boomwhackers were color coded the same way. Each color corresponds to a pitch so it would be a visual cue for the students to play. And last but not least the video had a witch conductor that would articulate the rhythm by bouncing on the pumpkins. The results this time were drastically different. The students performed better and they stayed focused and engaged. That being said technology really enhances the flow and effectiveness of teaching when used properly.
